General Description/Position Purpose

The College of Arts and Sciences at Shippensburg University is seeking candidates for the position of Associate Dean, with an anticipated start date no later than January 1, 2019. The starting salary range is competitive and includes an extensive benefits package and tuition waivers for employees and any dependents. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean and shares responsibility for managing the operation of the College, primarily in the social sciences and humanities disciplinary areas of the College. Departments included in these categories are Art & Design, Communications / Journalism, Economics, English, History & Philosophy, Human Communication Studies, Global Languages and Cultures, Music / Theatre Arts, Political Science, and Sociology / Anthropology. The Associate Dean will also share joint responsibility to oversee interdisciplinary majors in International Studies and Interdisciplinary Arts, and minors in Disability Studies, Ethnic Studies, Technical and Professional Communication, and Women's and Gender Studies, as well as interdisciplinary degree completion programs in Health Care Administration and Professional Studies. The College is also home to the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Support Center.

The Associate Dean has responsibility for the following activities within the College of Arts and Sciences, primarily in the social sciences and humanities areas of the College:

  • In consultation with the Dean, other Associate Dean, and associated directors, faculty, and department chairpersons, manage the interdisciplinary programs, including scheduling and staffing of such classes within the college.

  • Collecting, analyzing data, and making recommendations in support of faculty-staffing, planning, budgeting, and other resource allocation.

  • Coordinating the management of faculty workload.

  • Working collaboratively to successfully resolve student concerns and issues.

  • Working collaboratively with chairpersons, faculty, and staff within shared-governance and committee structures.

  • Contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of advising support.

  • Providing leadership in assessment and management of academic programs.

  • Working to develop and implement effective strategies for programs that promote student success.

  • Providing leadership and support to civic engagement initiatives and experiential learning, including managing internships within the college.

  • Serving in the absence of the Dean.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned terminal degree from an accredited institution in one of the programs or closely related areas of the social science and humanities areas within the College of Arts and Sciences; demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service; evidence of commitment to student success; demonstrated leadership skills; commitment to shared governance. At least one year of administrative experience is required. Experience with grant-writing and/or undergraduate research is highly desired. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively, and the ability to analyze quantitative data. This is a 12-month position and is classified as a State System Manager 210. Successful completion of an on-campus interview is also required.
