Date Posted 03/14/2019
Executive-Academic Vice President and Provost
Employment Type Fulltime
Application Deadline Open until filled

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for two full-time Associate Provosts and Academic Deans of the College with the Provost’s Office.

Gustavus Adolphus College is a private liberal arts college in Saint Peter, Minn., that prepares over 2,200 undergraduates for lives of leadership, service, and lifelong learning. Fully accredited and known for its strong science, writing, music, athletics, study-away, and service-learning programs, Gustavus hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and is internationally recognized for its annual Nobel Conference.

The primary areas of responsibility for the two deans will be the departments and interdisciplinary programs within the five academic divisions of the college; the division of these areas will be determined based upon the expertise and affinity of the successful candidates. The hiring of the two deans is part of a planned transition from internal interim deans, following a successful Provost search last year. Both deans will oversee and advance the work of academic programs in their areas, including oversight of budget and hiring. The two deans will work closely together, with the Provost, and with department chairs and faculty to advance the academic program of the College; a collaborative style is essential. The deans will also be responsible for oversight of general education programs, assessment of institutional student learning outcomes, and student academic experiences.

Expression of understanding and alignment with the mission of Gustavus Adolphus College, including a commitment to excellence in the liberal arts

Achievement of a terminal degree, though not necessarily in an academic field within the division(s) they will lead

Achievement of the faculty rank of associate or full professor at an academic institution

Experience in teaching undergraduate students

A minimum of two years of professional leadership experience (e.g., dean, associate/assistant dean, department chair, program/office director)

Evidence of a commitment to college-wide goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Demonstrated active listening skills and evidence of strong oral and written interpersonal communication that is both clear and concise

Demonstrated collaborative leadership style working within and across divisions of an organization

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in the evaluation and mentoring of faculty

Experience with the creation and implementation of strategic plans and initiatives

Experience with curriculum development

Appreciation for varied pedagogical techniques

Leadership within interdisciplinary programs

Experience with development and/or implementation of assessment strategies for major institutional initiatives or programs

Experience in budget development and management

Applications and inquiries will be held in strictest confidence until such time as the candidate and the college mutually agree on a more public final candidacy.
