Position Objective

The Associate Dean for Transitional Studies provides leadership, vision, and support of the College in recruiting and educating Transitional Studies students.  As part of Academic Instruction and Transitional Studies, the Associate Dean administers English as Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development (GED), and Integrated Basic Education Skill Training (I-BEST) programs as well as acts as a liaison to other College departments such as International Education and Workforce Education programs for shared student support. reporting to the Dean for Academic Instruction this position is responsible for key administrative and budgetary aspects of the program and works closely with program faculty and office staff. 

Are you up for a challenge?  As Associate Dean for Transitional Studies you will hit the ground running, creating continuity and stability as you catch up on budget and grants, increase FTEs, support faculty and their needs, and work toward eliminating remedial courses through Guided Pathways. Our successful candidate will really care about student success, have a positive attitude, be passionate about creating and maintaining community partnerships, and will actively submit new grant proposals and work cross-functionally to get things done. What will you do first?  Dive in! Work on class scheduling, define needs, establish processes and become familiar with budgets and state grant recording systems and compliance. Get to know key positions and develop relationships. Our ideal candidate will be transparent, a good communicator, who will build consensus and lead, not just manage, be innovative and willing to take thoughtful and calculated risks.

Duties and Tasks (Essential Functions)

Manage, supervise and evaluate programs, faculty and staff

  • Oversee state and federal regulations relating to ABE/GED/ESL, and I-BEST, including working with the Dean for Academic Instruction and program faculty related to curriculum requirements.

  • Serve as the College liaison to councils, and educational and community organizations.

  • In consultation with the Dean, provide administrative oversight of program staff, I-BEST navigator, and faculty.

  • Work with the Dean for Academic Instruction and program faculty to establish procedures which meet state competency requirements.

  • Monitor enrollment and retention efforts, working with faculty and staff to design and implement program changes as needed.

  • Mediate and assist in resolving issues between faculty, students, administration and staff.

  • Investigate and make determinations regarding student concerns, following the timelines and guidelines set forth.

  • Guide, monitor and support the professional development of the faculty.

  • Participate in the tenure process for faculty.

  • Collaborate with the Dean and faculty to create teaching schedules and hire/evaluate faculty.

  • Manage/reconcile and plan program budgets.

  • Foster a culture that supports collegiality, inclusion, equity, instructional excellence, personal well-being and professional development of students, faculty and staff.

Develop and manage educational pathways, grants, and community partnerships

  • Collaborate with the Dean, I-BEST Manager, Northwest Technical High School, other College departments, and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to develop and expand educational opportunities (curriculum and programs) for students.

  • Write and/or monitor grants/contracts; actively pursuing new grants, contracts and partnerships that expand services and opportunities to students.

  • Use grant electronic systems to submit and manage grants.

  • Oversee student outreach, placement and CASAS testing, and orientation/registration for all students in ABE/EESL, ABE, GED, and I-BEST programs across campus.

  • Direct outreach to Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and industry to increase enrollment.

Participate in shared governance, planning and other college committees/activities

  • Serve on college committees, representing Instruction and Administration.

  • Provide and develop, designated procedures, specifications and reports as needed.

  • In collaboration with the VPI and Dean, develop instructional goals and strategies for the division.

  • Participate in activities that support college accreditation 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.

  • Three (3) years of experience in higher education, including, but not limited to Adult Basic Education, Developmental Education, Workforce Development, or TRIO.

  • Experience recruiting, retaining or supporting historically underserved populations in higher education (for example, ABE, Developmental Education, Fresh Start, High School 21+, TRIO, ESL, GED, and Workforce programs).

  • Demonstrated experience as an effective leader.

  • The ability to contribute to the college's commitment to diversity fostering a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience in developing culturally relevant curriculum, and/or professional development for faculty.

  • Experience in project management, and the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.

  • Teaching Experience.

  • Demonstrated experience securing, writing, or managing grants and contracts. 

  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading a change initiative, particularly as it relates to equity, diversity, and inclusion for staff, faculty, and/or students.

Our college has a rich history of professional and technical education dating back to the 1940s, when Clover Park School District established a War Production program, training civilians as auto mechanics, aircraft-service mechanics, ship-fitters, welders and blueprint readers.  Now, CPTC offers more than forty programs in Aerospace, Advanced Manufacturing, Health Sciences, Human Services, Business, Hospitality, Science Technology, Engineering, Transportation and Trades.
