Associate Dean, Workforce Instruction

The Workforce Instruction Dean and the Associate Dean work collaboratively to provide strategic leadership and support for innovation and excellence in teaching, learning, assessment, and student success in the Workforce Instruction Division at North Seattle College.  The position functions to increase faculty and staff capacity across a broad range of division activities within the Workforce Instruction Division, focusing on overseeing the Accounting, Application Development, Business, Early Childhood Education, Electronics, Emergency Medicine, Engineering Graphics and Design, Information Technology, Internships, Medical Assisting, Real Estate and Property Management, Parent Education, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy, and Watch Technology departments. Responsibilities include working with division staff and faculty to ensure operational effectiveness while intentionally supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion within the Workforce Instruction Division. This position supervises more than 100 faculty and 15 staff.
This is a non-represented, civil service exempt position.

The Workforce Instruction Associate Dean's responsibilities will include the following Unit Administrator duties:

  • Collaborate with Dean in hiring and supervision;

  • Participate in accreditation activities;

  • Assist with budget development/management;

  • Review and analyze enrollment data;

  • Support curriculum development, outcomes assessment, and program review;

  • Assist with grant preparation and administration;

  • Collaborate with Dean and faculty to develop quarterly and annual class schedules;

  • Support Technical Advisory Committees;

  • Work with the Dean on program development and changes for Workforce Instruction Division;


  • Work with and provide leadership for faculty coordinators;

  • Observe and evaluate part time faculty teaching;

  • Assist in faculty orientation and professional development;

  • Facilitate part-time faculty complaint and conduct issues;

  • Work with lab faculty and technicians to assess equipment needs and ensure laboratory safety;

  • Oversee the professional development plans for all professional faculty;


  • Support student recruitment, retention and transition, specifically underrepresented and underserved populations;

  • Serve as primary point of contact for student concerns in Workforce Instruction Division;

  • Collaborate with staff in Student Development Services;

  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion on a personal level by developing cultural competence, and on a professional level by taking actions that further social equity and the bridging of differences

  • Communicate effectively and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff administrators and community regarding all matters concerning the Workforce Instruction Division;

  • Foster connections across departments and divisions for innovative and responsive teaching and learning;

  • Assume the Dean's responsibilities in their absence;

  • Attend committees as required;

  • Work within the various collective bargaining agreement;

  • Work collaboratively across the district and lead (if directed) projects and initiatives in support of student success.

  • Other duties as assigned or as necessary.   



  • Master's Degree in related discipline;

  • Evidence of teaching experience with adult learners;

  • Management, coordination, supervision, or administrative experience;

  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students; to mediate conflict; and to make effective decisions that impact multiple units;

  • Experience with anticipating, prioritizing, and managing tasks while respecting the personalities, experiences, and competing priorities of a diverse audience;

  • Strong leadership experience and qualities;

  • Excellent communication skills;

  • Experience reviewing and analyzing data;

  • Strong computer skills including full Microsoft Office Suite;  



  •  Budget development and management experience;

  • Experience conducting teaching observations;

  • Experience with curriculum development and outcomes assessment;

  • Demonstrate understanding of the goals, objectives, and issues related to community colleges.
