Jackson State University invites applications for Dean of Mississippi's only accredited School of Public Health.

The School of Public Health (SPH) provides a learning environment that supports interdisciplinary communication, development of professional public health concepts, values and the resolution of healthcare issues. The SPH offers undergraduate degrees in Healthcare Administration and Communicative Disorders and accredited graduate degrees in public health (MPH and Dr.PH)-recently reaffirmed by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), and Communicative Disorders (MS)-reaffirmed by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CM) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Position Summary
The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative leader of the school, and works collaboratively with faculty, students and staff to integrate plans of the school with those of the university as well as advance the school's mission of creating and disseminating knowledge to prevent disease and promote the health of populations worldwide. This position will ensure that the policies, guidelines and regulations established by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, the Office of the President, and the Division of Academic Affairs are followed. Additionally, the Dean is responsible for communicating the vision and goals, and for all matters related to the administration of the school - including academic programs, faculty, students, staff, facilities, budget, alumni relations, and fundraising. This position reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and represents the school in collaborations with other schools and colleges within the university. The Dean will also work externally to promote the School as a leader in public health research, policy and practice in the State of Mississippi, regionally, nationally and globally.

The Dean will enhance and accelerate research, discovery, and critical inquiry across the School while providing adept operational oversight of a professional school in a complex institutional environment, one that is grounded in shared governance and a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. The successful candidate will be a highly respected leader in their field with a strong record of funded research in an area related to public health and will have the necessary record to be appointed as a faculty member at the level of Professor.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • ? Maintain and enhance the stature of the school by ensuring that it continues to be at the forefront of research and the education of students prepared to be public health professionals and leaders in a changing world.

  • ? Maintain high standards in faculty recruitment, appointments, promotion and tenure in order to promote consistent excellence in research, teaching and service.

  • ? Foster a student-centered culture that enhances effective teaching, engages students in faculty research, maintains a diverse and inclusive learning environment, builds strong relationships between students, faculty, staff and alumni, and promotes leadership development.

  • ? Maintain and enhance the financial health of the school.

  • ? Mentor and develop the leadership team at the SPH to ensure the next generation of academic public health leadership.

  • ? Ensure strong collaborative relationships with the executive offices of the University and the deans of the other university schools and colleges.

  • ? Raise the school's visibility and obtain financial and other types of support from individuals, foundations and corporations for school-wide initiatives, programmatic efforts, research, public service, faculty and student projects, student support and discretionary activities.

  • ? Take an active leadership role in promoting and building the university's and school's global health programs, initiatives and investments.

  • ? Serve as a catalyst and advocate for innovative and impactful research.

  • ? Promote the parallel development of excellence within departments and across disciplinary lines and academic units, along with the enhancement of collaborations between the School and other academic units, centers and external organizations.

  • ? Enhance the engagement of alumni in the activities and advancement of the School.

  • ? Foster a vibrant intellectual community among all constituents within the School.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess the following foundational experiences in their personal and professional backgrounds to prepare them for success as Dean of the JSU SPH:

  • National/international recognition as a scholar with credentials commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of professor in the School of Public Health.

  • Executive management experience in a leading academic, multidisciplinary research, or government environment, with demonstrated achievement in the education of public health professionals and researchers.

  • Recruitment, retention and development of outstanding cohorts of faculty, staff and students.

  • Success contributing to institutional diversity, equity and inclusion goals.

LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES

Strategic Vision:

  • Should possess a strong and dynamic vision for public health and the role of the institution in advancing research, education and service.

  • Should develop initiatives and programs that will advance the School's state, regional, national and global contributions in public health.

Collaborative Leadership:

  • Should have demonstrated leadership abilities to build effective collaborations across disciplines and schools and bring a collegial, consultative and collaborative orientation to the role.

  • Should drive multidisciplinary approaches from both the top down and the bottom up to benefit Jackson State University.

  • Should have demonstrated capability to work effectively in a team-based organization, collaborate cross-functionally and globally, exercise influence at senior levels, and build alignment around a common set of goals.

External Relations:

  • Should be able to engage successfully with external constituencies and develop, build and strengthen organizational relationships for mutual long-term gain.

  • Should be a genuine, passionate and energetic spokesperson able to champion public health research, education, practice and service within a preeminent research institution and among a wide and diverse range of external constituencies, including community partnerships.
