The University of Hawai'i at An image without descriptionAn image without description seeks a dynamic visionary, collaborative, and enterprising leader to serve as Dean of the College of Engineering (COE). This position is an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of engineering excellence at UH An image without description the state of Hawai'i, and the Asia Pacific region. As an indispensable facet of sustainable living in Hawai'i and the Asia-Pacific region, COE is committed to ensuring that its academic and research efforts support the well-being of the people, economy, and environment of Hawai'i. These efforts include addressing local industry demand, sustainability, and infrastructure while embracing complex issues which affect society at large (e.g., IT and cyber systems, food and water security). Furthermore, as the only engineering college with ABET-accredited programs in Hawai'i, COE is committed to excellence in the development of the next generation of engineering leaders.

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative leader of the COE and provides leadership and vision in strategic planning and implementation of programs and leads COE development activities. The successful candidate manages financial resources and external relations and provides vision and leadership resulting in significant increases in resource acquisition for COE from private gifts, grants, contracts, and other sources of revenue. As a member of the UH An image without description executive team reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean ensures that the mission and goals of COE are aligned with UH An image without description and the University of Hawai'i System's vision and strategic mission. The Dean judiciously balances the best interests of COE with those of the campus, system and community.

The Dean manages an annual budget of approximately $36 million in state and federal funds, and represents the activities of COE to the wider university, alumni, industry, and donors as well as the Hawai'i and Pacific communities. Since fall 2009, enrollment at COE has increased by 53%; there are more than 1,500 UH An image without description students currently majoring in programs within COE.  The college offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and a BS in Computer Engineering. The College has approximately 60 faculty, 30 support staff and 50 graduate assistants staffing three academic departments: Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and an organized research center, the Hawai'i Center for Advanced Communications. Many unique resources exist across COE and UH An image without descriptionincluding the Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory, the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, and the Advanced Electron Microscopy Center. UH An image without description is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai'i System and one of the select number of campuses nation-wide recognized as a Land-Grant, Sea-Grant, Space-Grant, and Sun-Grant university. A comprehensive research university, UH An image without description is classified as a R1 doctoral university (highest research activity) and has notably broad and deep strengths in research, teaching, and community outreach related to the Asia Pacific region, enriched by its diverse, multi-cultural setting in Hawai'i and location in the Pacific with proximity to Asia. As such it combines strong service to the State of Hawai'i with prominent engagement as a national and international leader in higher education. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1.   Earned doctorate in Engineering or closely related field. 
2.   Five (5) years of professional experience in academic leadership at the level of department chairperson or higher or comparable professional experience. 
3.   Attained the rank of full professor or demonstrated a record of comparable professional experience prior to appointment. 
4.   Evidence of distinguished teaching, scholarship, research, publication, and/or professional excellence and achievement. 
5.   Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. 
6.   Demonstrated fundraising ability and/or experience. 
7.   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with multiple constituencies. 
8.   Ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment. 
9.   Demonstrated commitment to consultative and collaborative processes. 
10. Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical and academic standards. 
11. Demonstrated experience in partnering with industry to develop opportunities for the technical and professional development of students.
 
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
1.  Demonstrated experience creating and developing innovative programs/initiatives. 
2.  National recognition and reputation in the Engineering community; and/or the ability to command the respect of colleagues in research, university administration, federal agencies, and other extramural funding sources. 
3.  Familiarity with or experience in a unionized environment in higher education. 
4.  Understanding and/or appreciation of the unique island and Native Hawaiian culture.
