Job Description:

Boston Conservatory at Berklee is seeking a dynamic and visionary academic and artistic leader to serve as dean of its Theater Division. The Dean of Theater will be an experienced and innovative leader prepared to develop an expanding musical theater and contemporary theater curriculum while honoring the values of a rigorous conservatory learning experience.The 2016 merger of the Boston Conservatory and Berklee has created the world’s most comprehensive institution for the study of performing arts and related professions, and represents a unique opportunity for the new Dean. Boston Conservatory at Berklee is a discrete collegiate unit within the larger Berklee universe, continuing to offer its internationally recognized programs in theater, dance, and music. There is great excitement about continuing to explore both new program development and curricular and collaborative opportunities that will allow the institution to pioneer innovative models of theatrical training. The Dean of Theater will take a leadership role, alongside the Executive Director, in guiding these crucial conversations and the evolution that will follow.The Dean will lead a theater faculty composed of distinguished professionals, augmented by nationally known guest artists. The Dean reports to the Executive Director, working closely with the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Deputy Chief of Staff, and in collaboration with Boston Conservatory’s dance and music deans around institutional initiatives.

Essential Functions/Primary Duties and Responsibilities Opportunities for Leadership:

Curricular innovation with a focus on 21st century skills. Assessment of the curriculum and production choices to ensure a broadening of aesthetics and approaches with a focus on inclusivity.

New program development in collaboration with Berklee Online, Berklee NYC, Berklee Valencia and Berklee College of Music, Boston campus.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional theater artist and scholar with a track record of achievement at the highest level.

A professional with a proven track record of innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to career-building in the contemporary artistic environment.

An inspirational, collegial, team-oriented leader eager to work within the conservatory/college environment.A person with strong, active relationships to the professional world and considerable teaching and curriculum design experience in higher education.

A compassionate and caring mentor with strong interpersonal skills and an effective, persuasive, and inspirational communicator.An inclusive leader, committed to fostering an environment of inclusion and belonging where all can do their best work.A strong advocate for conservatory theater training.

Required skills:

Strong vision for shaping current and future trends in theater education with an eye on the professional landscape, including understanding of/experience with digital learning and its implications for conservatory training.Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Boston Conservatory at Berklee and the entire Berklee organization.Ability to create and manage departmental budgets and resources.Ability to hire, mentor, and evaluate faculty and staff while providing an inclusive, supportive team environment.Proven commitment to hiring and enrolling a diverse community.

Required experience:

Demonstrated leadership and administrative experience in theater-related educational and professional environments.Track record of successful partnerships with educational and arts organizations as well as experience in coalition building with other arts institutions nationally and/or internationally.Experience/knowledge of designing and implementing performing arts student recruitment strategies.

Additional information:

Boston Conservatory at Berklee offers a Bachelors of Fine Arts in musical theater and contemporary theater, as well as a Masters of Fine Arts in musical theater. The theater division employs 30 full time and 40 part time faculty. FY19 enrollment stands at 38 undergraduate contemporary theater students, 237 undergraduate musical theater students, and 22 graduate musical theater students. The Theater Division presents more than 45 student, faculty, and guest-artist performances each year in on-campus venues, which include the Boston Conservatory Theater (325-seat mainstage proscenium theater) and our Zack Box Theater (60-seat black box theater). Since its founding in 1867, Boston Conservatory's students and faculty have shared their talent and creativity with the city of Boston, the region and the nation. Boston Conservatory continues to grow today as a vibrant community of artists and educatorsBerklee College of Music is the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world. Known primarily as the world's foremost institute for the study of jazz and modern American music, it also offers in a wide range of styles, including rock, flamenco, hip hop, reggae, salsa, and bluegrass. As of 2015, Berklee alumni have been awarded a total of 253 Grammy Awards. Since 2012, Berklee College of Music also operates a campus in Valencia, Spain. Berklee Online is the world's largest provider of online music education, both MOOCs and coursework leading to fully accredited online degrees.
