SUMMARY: The Dean will be responsible for providing leadership in the College of Education through excellence in leadership, teaching, research, mentoring and advising. Primary duties include overseeing and managing the College of Education, leading accreditation efforts for the programs and supervise all faculty. Other duties may include academic advising of College of Education students, working with advisory committees, developing relationships and collaboration with high school and Higher Education, monitoring student assessment, keeping updated inventories, developing curricula for effective teaching, participating in college committees and serving the community through outreach activities and other duties assigned by supervisor. This position may require overseeing the teaching of courses in evenings and/or on weekends and requires experience in the use of appropriate technology for performance of the listed responsibilities.


A. Personnel

  • Recruits, selects and hires (in consultation with the Provost) Education Programs Faculty and ensures proper recruitment of administrative staff.

  • Designs and monitors professional development plans for College of Education Faculty and administrative staff.

  • Appraises Education Program Faculty. Makes recommendations to the Provost for promotion and retention.

  • Monitors and assessing performance other faculty and staff, or related organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

  • Ensures proper administration of personnel policies and procedures as defined by the Staff Handbook, Faculty Handbook, Board approved policies and various Collective Bargaining Agreements.

  • Fosters development of team work of the College of Education and it is committed to the College of Education goals and mission by encouraging active participation of College of Education members.

  • Participates in local, state and national Education meetings.

B. Grants, Partnerships, and Budgets

  • Participates actively in securing funding for the College of Education such as grant submission, donations, and is actively involved in institutional advancement effort, and public/private partnerships.

  • Ensures effective management of financial resources including budget planning and management.

  • Participates in the annual budget planning process for the College of Education budget, including operating and capital expenditures and guide directors and/or faculty in the budget process.

C. Administration

  • Oversees and implements strategies towards the achievement of the institutional Strategic Plan goals, objectives, and tasks.

  • Oversees actively all personnel matters involving academic and non-academic employees including: recruiting, appointment, re-appointment; termination and dismissal; faculty evaluation, tenure, promotion and merit; and the preparation and approval(s) of faculty workload plans and long-range professional development plans.

  • Develops and maintains the relationship between the College of Education and the college, including, but not limited to, acting as a liaison with campus academic programs, departments and administrators and with other Education programs.

  • Attends and leads the College of Education meetings.

  • Develops and implements strategies and policies to increase student recruitment and retention for all programs in the College.

  • Develops and implements Continuing Education courses to increase the College revenues.

  • Develops and implements academic policies and procedures for the College of Education in collaboration with faculty and staff.

  • Recommends termination and/or suspension of unsustainable programs when appropriate.

  • Acts as a liaison with the national and state accrediting agencies in collaboration with the College of Education faculty and staff.

  • Achieves and maintains national and state accreditation for the college's Education programs.

  • Serves on the college committees when applicable.

  • Participates in activities that facilitate professional expertise in the areas of administration, teaching and maintenance of Education competence.

  • Assists in publicizing and disseminating information about the College of Education. Participates in regional accreditation reviews and reports, as requested.

  • Applies and communicate accurately College of Education and college policies, procedures and rationales with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Innovates effective teaching/learning principles for student success in the College of Education programs.

  • Gathers data and prepares reports requested by local, state, national agencies and/or the Office of the Provost.

  • Work with the Dean of Students in issues related to student complains.

D. Curricula

  • Develops, implements and evaluates the Education program curricula in collaboration with the faculty in accordance with national and state regulations, accreditation standards and college policy.

  • Assures that master syllabi utilizing competencies, objectives and current instructional materials are up to date.

  • Reviews suggestions for changes in master syllabi and programs at the College of Education meetings.

  • Recommends methods for measuring student attainment of program competencies and outcomes to the college assessment department in collaboration with the College of Education.

E. Performs all other duties as assigned. 

F. Evaluation

  • The Dean of the College of Education serves at the pleasure of the President and employment in the position is at-will. A Dean may also have tenure as a faculty member, but there is no tenure as a Dean.

  • The Dean is evaluated annually by the Provost based upon the dean's annual goals and objectives. Each year in consultation with the Provost, these objectives are set to reflect the annual goals of NNMC and the college as well as the Dean's own objectives.


  • Minimum of a doctoral degree in Education, Education Leadership, Childhood Teacher Education, or related experience.

  • Minimum of two years of academic leadership as a director, chair, or dean.

  • Minimum five years of working experience teaching at the college/university level.

  • Independence - Ability to be independent and accomplish tasks/deadlines with minimal supervision
