The Assistant Dean is a leadership position that reports directly to the dean and provides oversight and direct support for all matters of student support and academic success. The assistant dean supports the dean, department chairs, and the faulty in providing an outstanding educational experience for students. This person must be able to work independently and in collaboration with other administrators, faculty and staff in resolving student academic issues.

The School of Engineering at Manhattan College seeks applications for the position of Assistant Dean. The Assistant Dean is a leadership position that reports directly to the dean and provides oversight and direct support for all matters of advising, student support, and academic success. The assistant dean supports the dean, department chairs, and the faculty in providing an outstanding educational experience for students. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and in collaboration with other administrators, faculty, and staff in resolving student academic issues. A master’s degree and five years of experience dealing directly with students on academic issues are required. A professional engineering license and a bachelor’s degree in a major offered by the school are positive attributes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Acting on behalf of the dean on student academic issues in the dean’s absence.

  • Serving as the primary, initial point of contact for any issue that interferes with a student’s academic success.

  • Advising students on selection of a major within the school or elsewhere in the College.

  • Serving as the primary advisor to first-semester students to aid them in delineating an academic career path and subsequent scheduling in the major.

  • Supporting student academic progress from recruiting support and orientation, through grade and academic progress monitoring, registration and approval, retention, and graduation clearance.

  • Identifying, tracking, advising and working with students who are at high risk of academic failure using College-approved software. Work with other offices on campus to support those high-risk students.

  • Participating in meetings related to student academic matters including department chair meetings and scheduled Assistant Dean meetings.

  • Maintaining records and systems required to monitor and support student success and progress, including the College’s degree auditing system (currently Degree Works) used for graduation clearance.

  • Evaluating course transfer equivalencies for incoming undergraduate transfer students in collaboration with chairs and program directors.

  • Advising inter-school transfer students changing schools and majors in collaboration with the other school’s assistant dean/academic advisor.

  • Participating in professional development and staying current with best practices in advising.

  • Enforcing curriculum rules and required academic standards.

  • Approving modified program forms with department chairs.

  • Supporting accreditation efforts at the College and school levels.

  • Accessing and preparing data for various institutional and external reports.

  • Where appropriate, independently answering and resolving student and parental concerns and other issues of student success.

  • Addressing other responsibilities as assigned by the dean.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Strong oral and written communications.

  • Strong understanding of and ability to apply knowledge of student support and demonstrated ability to develop programs, policies and procedures for continual improvement.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.

  • Ability to resolve contentious situations in a professional manner.

  • Ability to use the Manhattan College Ellucian Banner, Self Service, Degree Works, BDMS, and Argos systems.

  • Ability to use the Microsoft Office programs of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
