The University of New Hampshire (UNH), a Carnegie R1 research institution, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA). UNH seeks a creative and collaborative leader with a strong record of academic achievement, interdisciplinary leadership, and forward-thinking vision. The successful candidate will be strongly committed to fulfilling COLSA’s academic mission, dedicated to enhancing faculty and student diversity, and will foster an environment for faculty, staff, and students to maintain and strengthen academic and research excellence. Minimum qualifications for the position include a Ph.D., Sc.D., or other appropriate terminal degree and prior academic leadership experience.

COLSA is one of the University’s seven colleges with 130 faculty including tenured and tenure-track, lecturer, clinical, research and extension faculty, and approximately 2,400 undergraduate majors and graduate students. COLSA is home to four dynamic and intellectually diverse academic departments: 1) Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems; 2) Biological Sciences; 3) Molecular, Cellular, and Biomedical Sciences; 4) Natural Resources and the Environment; and is home to the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station. The College offers a wide spectrum of life science, agricultural, biomedical, and terrestrial and marine natural resources majors in associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. In addition, COLSA is affiliated with several on-campus interdisciplinary research centers including the Center for Biomedical and Bioengineering Research, Hubbard Center for Genome Studies, and the New Hampshire Water Resource Research Center. In addition, UNH maintains three active marine laboratories including Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, Judd Gregg Marine Science Complex, and Shoals Marine Laboratory, plus two state-of-the-art aquaculture facilities collectively providing unprecedented research, education, and outreach opportunities for our students and the broader N.H. Seacoast community.

The new dean will have the opportunity to develop programs that exploit the unique combination of disciplines within COLSA. The new dean also will help pursue the University’s bold aspiration to be among the top 25 public universities in the country, while actively supporting COLSA’s tradition of student-focused teaching and learning. The dean will build on existing and foster new relationships with state and federal legislators and constituencies and external partners.

The dean of COLSA reports to the provost and vice president for academic affairs and is responsible for administering COLSA’s academic programs and for aligning these programs with UNH’s Strategic Plan. The dean operates under a responsibility-centered management budgeting model, operating an annual budget of $51M with nearly $17M in annual sponsored research expenditures. The dean also will work closely with the UNH Foundation and the COLSA development team on fundraising efforts for the upcoming $450M university-wide capital campaign.

Inquiries, nominations, and applications are invited. The search will be conducted with a commitment of confidentiality for candidates until finalists are selected. Greenwood/Asher & Associates Inc. is assisting UNH in this search. Inquiries, nominations, and application materials should be directed to Lauren McCaghren at laurenmccaghren@greenwoodsearch.com. Application materials should include CV, cover letter, and list of five references. Submission of application materials as PDF attachments is strongly encouraged. Initial screening of applications will begin immediately, and applications and nominations will be accepted until an appointment is made.
