Description

West Shore Community College (WSCC) is seeking a dynamic individual with distinguished records of academic and administrative experience to serve as its next Dean of Arts and Sciences. The proper candidate should be able to demonstrate a history of excellent leadership that includes effective interpersonal skills, successful change management, and commitments to the complex role of a community college and student success. The Dean of Arts and Sciences will be a visionary leader committed to teamwork and continuous improvement, pursuing greatness through an appropriate mix of collaboration, personal effort, and the empowerment of others.
 
WSCC is located in a beautiful four-season recreational area near the shore of Lake Michigan and serves a multi-county district. WSCC is uniquely positioned with beautiful facilities, up-to-date technology, talented and committed faculty and staff, and tremendous community support. The college offers a comprehensive general education curriculum designed to meet the needs of students desiring to transfer, as well as a broad selection of occupational programs for students desiring to pursue immediate employment. WSCC's fall enrollment is typically around 1,200 students.

Job Duties

The Dean of Arts and Sciences provides leadership, management, planning, and advocacy for faculty, staff, programs, and services within Arts and Sciences at WSCC. The Dean leads several academic divisions in a variety of general education disciplines and transfer programs, guiding the faculty in academic excellence, collaboration, innovation, and student success. By working collaboratively with faculty and other academic staff, stakeholders across campus, and community members and organizations, the Dean ensures the college provides effective and relevant programming that meets the needs and goals of students and the surrounding community. The Dean of Arts and Sciences reports directly to the Vice President of Academics and Student Services.
To carry out this position, the Dean is responsible for collaborating appropriately and effectively with others to accomplish the following duties:
Academic Leadership

  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate instructional programs and services relating to Arts & Sciences. Programs should be in alignment with the college mission and strategic direction; meet student, community, employer, and transfer partner needs; and foster academic excellence, collaboration, innovation, and student success.

    • Provide effective leadership in the preparation of the schedule of classes and room assignments for Arts & Sciences program areas. Ensure that all sections have sufficient student enrollment.

    • Develop and manage departmental budgets that meet the needs of Arts & Sciences programs while also maintaining fiscal responsibility and prudence.

    • Foster appropriate uses of academic technology in the classrooms, labs, and online environments of Arts & Sciences program areas.

Curriculum

  • Guide program review, program and curriculum development, and assessment and improvement planning and implementation within Arts & Sciences.

    • Provide leadership in working with faculty to develop program and course learning outcomes.

    • Ensure faculty within Arts & Sciences are conducting assessment activities and assist them in identifying and implementing improvements based on these results.

    • Provide sustained leadership in curriculum improvement through regular program review, evaluation, and revision.

  • Ensure that all Arts & Sciences programs maintain an active and effective advisory board, if needed and required by accrediting bodies, that meets at least annually or as otherwise required.

Community

  • Work closely with area employers, secondary and post-secondary school systems, community agencies and groups, and others to develop partnerships that are in the best interest of the college and its students. This includes working collaboratively with others to develop articulation agreements, dual enrollment/early college agreements, and transfer guides with K-12 and higher education partners.

  • Advance the reach of the Arts & Sciences into the community by offering community-oriented programming and learning series.

  • Represent the college and the Arts & Sciences programs in the community and at state and national events as needed.

Administration

  • Ensure Arts & Sciences programs and initiatives are aligned with the College's strategic plan.

  • Ensure all faculty have appropriate teaching loads and credentials.

  • Direct, supervise, and evaluate the performance of faculty and other staff who report to the Dean.

    • Actively promote, encourage, and support faculty development, excellence, and innovative teaching for full-time and adjunct faculty.

  • Serve as a member of the President's Leadership Team and other college teams as appropriate.

Additionally, the Dean of Arts & Sciences shall:

  • Ensure commitment to the highest professional standards and maintain confidential information.

  • Maintain and safeguard equipment, software, and facilities.

  • Comply with college policies and procedures.

  • Maintain a safe work environment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in an area appropriate to the supervision of liberal arts and sciences programs.

  • Minimum of three years' experience in a leadership position within higher education (this can include administrative leadership or a faculty leadership role such as a division chair).

  • Minimum of three years' teaching experience in higher education (full-time teaching experience is preferred, but equivalent experience as an adjunct will be considered).

  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and goals of a comprehensive community college

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all constituencies

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a team leader and team member with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and external constituencies.

  • Ability to thrive in an environment of change, be open-minded, and serve as a creative thinker and systemic problem solver.

  • Demonstrated commitment to student success and to enhancing teaching and learning.


Preferred Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in an area appropriate to the supervision of liberal arts and sciences programs.

  • Experience as an academic administrator in a community college.

  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development, instructional technology, on-line delivery, student learning assessment, quality improvement processes, accreditation, program development, professional development, grant writing, and/or evaluation.

 

Salary Range: $86,524 - $110,612
 
Starting Date:  July 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter

Review will begin immediately and will continue until position is filled.
