Assistant/Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences
College of Osteopathic Medicine

Marian University has an opening for an Assistant/Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM), and provides leadership and management of the COM biomedical sciences faculty in the interest of medical student education, faculty vitality and University respect, recognition and reputation through planning, budgeting and promotion of academic excellence.

As direct supervisor for the basic biomedical science faculty, this position engages in interface with search committees in hiring (with approval of the dean and provost) new and replacement faculty members, evaluating current faculty members on an ongoing basis, providing input on promotion and tenure actions and ensuring that all staffing required for quality teach of the medical students is in place, always with an eye to supporting the development of competent and caring medical students prepared for the next steps in their education. The management and promotion of the research enterprise within the basic science branch of the COM is also under the purview of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advance the vision and strategies of the dean for the efficient and effective operation of the COM

  • Participate in development, support and execution of the University and COM strategic plans

  • Contribute to the selection and development of biomedical faculty members providing guidance and interim and annual evaluation of teaching, research and service of each faculty member

  • Monitor and adjust faculty workload, workload distribution and assignments and as needed develops working groups or task forces to address relevant emergent issues

  • Engage faculty to develop budget requests and provides aggregated budget request data to the University administration and monitors/manages budgets assigned to the Assistant/Associate Dean

  • Maintain liaison with offices and officers within and outside the COM, including but not limited to: Provost, IRB Chair, Director of Sponsored Programs, Laboratory directors, Institutional Technology, Controller, Admissions and other entities relevant to effective management of the preclinical side of the COM

  • Promote a robust, student-oriented research program, ensuring responsible stewardship of available intramural funds while promoting efforts to obtain extramural funding, internal and external collaborations and a strong sense of the need for public dissemination of research findings

  • Participate in all committees to which the Assistant/Associate Dean is statutorily assigned including but not limited to the Dean's cabinet

  • Provide direct education to students when the incumbent has special expertise of value to the educational content of the COM curriculum


  • This position requires a terminal degree in a biomedical science discipline, generally the PhD, but ScD, DO/PhD, MD/PhD or other degrees or combination may be considered

  • Five years' experience as a faculty member and academic administration preferably at least at the level department chair, division director, or in a similar position is expected

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to successfully manage and objectively evaluate faculty

  • Must have sufficient familiarity with biomedical research to provide programmatic support for a robust research environment

  • Must have facility with strategic planning and execution

  • Familiarity with Federal and State regulatory matters impacting the biomedical faculty (FERPA, TITLE IX, HIPAA, Copyright and Fair Use, cadaver management) will be needed for successful execution of duties

  • Understands the COCA accreditation requirements related to the COM research program, in particular working to meet Standards 6.5 and 8 with its four subparagraphs.

  • Writing and rhetorical skills are essential for this position

  • Must be able to establish liaison with a broad range of campus entities with successful and collaborative interaction

  • Must have the ability to devise and manage budgets
