Summary of Duties:

The Associate Dean for Clinical Education is the principal academic officer for the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (ESFCOM) at the Everett clinical campus. She/he/they is a physician administrator with demonstrated success in the education of medical learners and the development of faculty toward their highest potential in their chosen field. She/he/they ensures that the educational experience each learner encounters in and around Everett, WA is of the highest quality possible and in compliance with the requirement of accreditation. She/he/they ensures that the faculty of the ESFCOM associated with the Everett campus are properly oriented to their roles and responsibilities as educators. She/he/they directs the delivery of medical education, working with hospitals, clinics, WSU Everett campus, and faculty to ensure a quality education program is delivered in Everett. She/he/they oversees an administrative staff responsible for student and faculty support on the Everett campus. The Associate Dean also works with the WSU administration to support research and scholarly work by faculty and learners. She/he/they works closely with the Chair of the Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences (DMECS), the Associate Dean for Accreditation, Assessment, and Evaluation, the Associate Dean for Curriculum, and the Associate Dean for Faculty Development to ensure horizontal and vertical integration as well as overall efficacy of medical education delivered in the Everett region.

Essential Functions | 95%

The Associate Dean for Clinical Education

  • Serves as the leader of the regional site, which is the face of Elson S Floyd College of Medicine with the local region.
  • Collaborates with the Chair of DMECS, Clinical Education Directors and the Founding Dean to achieve the mission in medical education and clinical care in Everett.
  • Develops and stewards health system and clinical affiliate relationships and is designated signing authority on the ESFCOM clinical affiliation agreements for the Everett region.
  • Ensures sound execution of all administrative duties and responsibilities.
  • Serves on required Committees in support of the College mission.
  • Assists in the recruitment and appointment of clinical faculty, civil service and administrative professional staff.
  • Engages with and secures affiliate agreements with new clinical partners to increase capacity and maintaining strong relationships with those partners.
  • Supports the medical school overall strategic planning process.
  • Leads the ongoing needs and growth of the clinical campus in Everett.
  • Stays current with health care trends that impact medical education.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Curriculum, the Associate Dean for Accreditation, Assessment and Evaluation and the Chair of DMECS to ensure that medical education programming in Everett meets Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards.
  • Advises, and participates in, the student recruitment and admissions process in the Everett campus, in collaboration with the ESFCOM Admissions Committee.
  • Oversees the operations of year 1 and 2 clinical preceptorships and clinical campus weeks, working with and giving guidance to appropriate staff.
  • Oversees and supports the year 3 and 4 clinical experiences and scheduling for the Everett cohort and/or students from other clinical campuses who complete clinical rotations in the Everett area
  • Oversees year 3 and 4 clinical education curriculum delivery on the Everett campus.
  • Works with the Associate Dean for Accreditation, Assessment & Evaluation to monitor student development, progression and achievement of educational outcomes in Everett, and ensures effective coaching, advising, counseling, and skills development (remediation) programs are available for students at risk.
  • Works with the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs to provide student support services in Everett ensuring that counseling, career advising, and the overall student experience is optimized.
  • Works with the Associate Dean for Curriculum to develop, implement, and coordinate curricular delivery for Clinical Campus Weeks (CCW), longitudinal integrated clerkships (LIC), and Year 4 Courses around the state consistent with the principle of comparability.
  • Supports faculty and staff in meeting their performance goals and objectives while continuously stretching goals to improve measurable outcomes and educational quality.
  • Works with the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/Continuing Medical Education to implement best practices for graduate and continuing medical education.
  • Provides input on learning and student support environment needs for clinical education on the WSU Everett campus and clinical sites in the Everett area.
  • Conducts annual reviews for Everett faculty as delegated by the Chair for Medical Education & Clinical Sciences and recommends faculty for awards/rewards based on performance in leadership, content knowledge, teaching expertise, and student outcomes.
  • Applies continuous quality leadership principles to all responsibility areas associated with medical education administration in Everett.
  • Assists in the development of LCME and Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) periodic reports related to student and faculty experience in Everett.
  • Models professionalism and leadership.
  • Fosters diversity and inclusion and supports inter-professionalism.
  • Promotes a positive work / learning environment in all Everett clinical settings and on the WSU Everett campus.
  • Contributes to building strong relationships with ESFCOM stakeholders and constituents in Everett.
  • Supports philanthropic development activities on behalf of the ESFCOM in Everett, as directed by the Dean.

Student Experience

  • Support first (M1) and second (M2) year medical students in CCW—thoughtfully curate meaningful clinical experiences, familiarize them with regional clinical partners, plan community engagement and enrichment, support their transition from M2 to third (M3) year medical student through LIC orientation and support, support scholarly projects, celebrate milestones, provide support for personal and emotional needs.
  • Support M3 students- through a well-planned, coordinated and organized LIC, support their assessment and testing needs, address preceptor/LIC concerns, purposeful matching with clinical coaches, guidance for Academic Half Day (AHD) cases, precepting AHD when needed, guidance for 4th year planning; work with student, Clinical Education Directors and academic advising to draft 4th year schedule; guidance for Curriculum Vitae, personal statement and notable characteristics, celebrate milestones, support scholarly projects, provide support for personal and emotional needs.
  • Support fourth (M4) year medical students—guidance and adjustments as needed to 4th year schedule, track travel/transportation needs, support assessment and testing needs, address preceptor/ 4th year scheduling concerns, celebrate milestones, support transition to residency, provide support for personal and emotional needs.

Clinical Partners

  • Recruit and orient clinical partners, promote values and mission of ESFCOM.
  • Meet regularly to check in with needs, concerns or worries regarding our partnerships.
  • Visit sites to become familiar with facilities and teaching environment.
  • Open channels of communication in order to be responsive to changes in medical environment.
  • Develops understanding of regional leadership with routine follow up.

  • Demonstrates sensitivity to how we best meet the needs of faculty in terms of optimizing number of students and fulfilling teaching goals.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD), or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), with current or recent Board Certification in his/her/their specialty.
  • Acknowledged experience with medical education delivery and health care delivery systems.
  • Experience managing professionals in a complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience at rank of Associate Professor or higher at an accredited medical school in the United States.
  • Experience interacting with the LCME or other educational accrediting bodies.
  • Served in a senior leadership role in a community based medical school or academic health center.
