The Graduate School has an opening for a part-time University Staff (unclassified) Dean position.

About the School:

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is known for its distinctive and highly productive research programs, its world-class health facilities and its well-established partnerships in business, industry and government. The campus continues to enhance graduate education to support its outstanding research programs.

The Graduate School oversees, facilitates, and enhances graduate education, while encouraging excellence in research, creative and scholarly work. Disciplines served include Basic and Biomedical Science, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Science, Public Health, Clinical Science, Biotechnology, Anatomy, Genetic Counseling, and Palliative Care. The Graduate School administers and serves Master’s programs, Doctoral programs, Certificates, and non-degree courses throughout the four schools and one college across CU Anschutz. The School also offers resources and support for prospective graduate students, current graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. The Graduate School serves over 1,100 students in 31 master’s and doctoral programs, in addition to a number of post-master’s and certificate programs.

Nature of Work:

The Dean of the Graduate School is responsible for providing leadership for the affiliated degree and certificate programs.  The position is part-time at 0.5 FTE.  The Dean will work with program directors, department chairs, unit and/or program heads, associate deans, deans, and the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs (EVC-ASA) to offer the vision, support infrastructure and dynamic leadership that strategically guides graduate admissions, student success and degree completion, in alignment with the CU Anschutz strategic plan.

Professional Field:

Experience in the health sciences or a closely related field. The Dean must have a record of research/scholarship, teaching, and service/leadership sufficient to be appointed as a full professor at the Anschutz Medical Campus.   

Supervision Received:

Appointed by the Chancellor on the recommendation of the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs (EVC-ASA), the Dean of the Graduate School reports directly to the EVC-ASA. The responsibilities assigned to this position are by broad directive and are generally accomplished without direct supervision. The Dean’s performance in this position is judged by the quality of overall results, rather than by conforming to pre-established specific standards.

Supervision Exercised:

The Dean shall have primary responsibility and accountability for all of the activities and personnel of the Graduate School.

Examples of Work Performed:

The Dean of the Graduate School has broad responsibilities across three major areas: a) recruiting, admission, and enrollment management; b) educational mission; and c) student support and success. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to (not in priority order):

  • In collaboration with the graduate faculty providing intellectual leadership and a strong commitment to graduate and post-doctoral education.
  • In collaboration with the graduate faculty spearheading educational advances in the Graduate School.
  • Providing general oversight and supervision of all aspects of the Graduate School.
  • Applying Graduate School policies governing Graduate School structure, governance, faculty appointments, and policies and procedures related to student admissions, degree requirements, and student grievances and appeal.
  • Working with the faculty Graduate Council to approve amendments to or new Graduate School policies.
  • Working with the faculty Graduate Council to approve changes to or entirely new graduate degree and certificate programs.
  • Working in consultation with the EVC-ASA and in collaboration with other deans to ensure a university-wide perspective on broad institutional matters pertaining to graduate and post-doctoral education.
  • Overseeing degree programs within the Graduate School, including evaluation of the effectiveness of degree programs in coordination with other deans.
  • Ensuring that all accreditation requirements involving the programs of the Graduate School are met in a timely manner.
  • Providing leadership in strategic planning activities.
  • Promoting the campus, the graduate programs and develop communication approaches to position graduate programs on the national stage.
  • Preparing and overseeing the Graduate School budget.
  • Providing leadership in research-related activities, including identifying and in some cases distributing graduate student and post-doctoral trainee funding.
  • Collaborating with the Vice Chancellor for Research to ensure that graduate and post-doctoral education is consistent with the goals of the institution for research, discovery, and creative work.
  • Supporting graduate student and post-doctoral trainee interests and activities, including the activities of graduate student and postdoctoral organizations. The dean is responsible for staying informed of graduate student and post-doctoral needs.
  • Providing leadership in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion goals.
  • Coordinating fundraising activities related to the Graduate School among college/school deans, the fundraising officials, and the chancellor.
  • Promoting cooperation in interdisciplinary initiatives among colleges/schools, departments and various programs in concert with broad university strategic planning goals.
  • Establishing, implementing and monitoring compliance with the rules and policies of the Graduate School, the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, the University of Colorado System, and state and federal guidelines, regulations and requirements.
  • Performing other duties as may be assigned by the EVC-ASA.

Salary and Benefits:

  • The salary range for this part-time (0.5 FTE) position has been established at $97,460 to $139,368.
  • The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
  • The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
  • This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned terminal doctorate or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited institution, preferably aligned with the health sciences fields.
  • Record of scholarship/research, teaching, and service/leadership sufficient to be appointed to the rank of full professor at the Anschutz Medical Campus.
  • Demonstrated experience in administration and leadership at an academic institution (e.g., at level of director, chair, associate dean, etc.). 
  • Demonstrated commitment to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive community. 
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fundraising experience.
  • Currently maintaining an active, funded research program involving PhD students and postdoctoral trainees.
  • A record of accomplishments in the area of graduate education.
  • Demonstrated leadership in teaching, research/scholarship and service.
  • Understanding of the challenges of contemporary graduate education.
  • Academic qualifications sufficient to be appointed as a tenured full professor at the Anschutz Medical Campus.

A successful candidate will be required to demonstrate:

  • A distinguished record of academic accomplishment in funded research as well as in graduate student teaching.
  • Strong commitment and accomplishment in developing, enhancing and sustaining a diverse student body, and to fully integrating principles of diversity, equity and inclusion into the Graduate School’s activities.

  • Creative skills to meet the challenges of graduate education in an increasingly competitive and technologically diverse environment.
  • Ability to motivate and manage change, energize and lead a committed faculty and staff.
  • Integrity – Value-based, honest relationships and transparent decision making.
