Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking an Assistant Dean/Director of Community Standards (ADDCS). Reporting to the Dean of Students, this position is responsible for helping to ensure the quality of life for the student experience and to provide safe spaces for all students. Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following.
  • Coordinates and advocates for institutional resources toward supporting students in need and mitigating circumstances that might distract them from their academic and personal development;
  • Develops educational programming to communicate RU-N community standards;
  • Lads in operating a student conduct system that holds RU-N students accountable for maintaining community standards;
  • Responsible for supporting all major student life large scale programs;
  • Serves as a member of the RU-N CARE Team and point of contact for students in crisis and or students that need resources or referrals within the University;
  • Works closely with the DS/AVC, often the ADDCS acts as a liaison and mediator for several key University Offices: Residence Life; the Student Ombudsperson; Financial Aid and Student Accounts; Academic Services, advisers, and all academic departments and units; the Rutgers Police Department; Legal Services; Counseling Services; Health Services/Education and outreach; and student organizations, leadership and governance;
  • Shares in the responsibilities of advising RU-N student governing councils, including the Honor Council;
  • Supervises a staff including an Assistant Director, a Program Coordinator, a graduate student coordinator, student assistants and several office work study assistants.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a master’s degree in student affairs administration, student development, higher education or a closely related advanced degree in Counseling, Social Work, etc.
  • A minimum of three years working in higher education and with college populations is required. The ideal candidate will have experience in a department within a student affairs organization (e.g. residence life, student activities, student development). A combination of degree background and experience in relevant positions in higher education will be considered

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Masters degree in Student Development and/or Higher Education or related degree is required.
  • Utilizes student development theory for best practices. 
  • Has broad experiences in a university setting;
  • Possesses decision making and problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Comparable educational background and experience is expected to understand the terms, sensitivities, and complexities of an institution with significant numbers of students in crisis.;
  • A preference will be given to individuals who have work experience with diverse student populations, faculty, staff and administration;
  • A minimum of five years experience is required, additional experience is strongly preferred.

Equipment Utilized
  • Regular use of computers and standard software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access) required;
  • Also, the ability to use database used by the AD, such as Maxient.
