About the Department

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the three largest colleges at NC State University in terms of student headcount. The mission of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is to serve the residents of North Carolina and meet the challenges of the 21st century by educating our students to be future leaders and responsible citizens with a distinctive willingness to engage in the life of their communities, their state, and their nation.

Our college offers baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees in a wide range of traditional and professional disciplines; it serves business, industry, government, public education, and individual citizens of the state through teaching, research, and engagement. These programs are carried out in ten academic units. Each functional area is funded by combinations of state appropriations, public and private contracts and grants, miscellaneous gifts and receipts, and sales and service receipts. Currently, the college employs 225 tenured/tenure track faculty, 239 professional track faculty, 97 staff, and 383 graduate teaching and research assistants. The college has (for FY ‘21)103 endowments with a total market value of $11.8M and private fundraising $2.4M. Annual expenditures exceed $65 million. The college’s research is supported by an average of $6.4 million in annual grant and contract funding.

The data for academic programs and students include:
  • Six B.S., 47 B.A., one Bachelor of Social Work, 14 Master’s, 5 Ph.D. Programs, and four graduate certificate programs.
  • More than 4,500 college students, including double majors; about 81%undergraduates and 19% graduate students.

Every NC State undergraduate student takes general education classes in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The college is in the top two in terms of the number of undergraduate students it graduates every year, as compared to the other 9 colleges.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) has a long history of involvement in interdisciplinary teaching and research. As we continue this tradition in a changing world, the College aims to strengthen its current offerings of interdisciplinary programs and seeks to identify additional opportunities to enhance interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate education, scholarship, research, and engagement. We are also committed to making interdisciplinary programs widely available to diverse populations through distance education. Interdisciplinary Studies serves about 500–600 major students, 100–200 minors, offers a large number of classes for NC State’s General Education Program, and is a central element of both
the College’s and the University’s strategic plan. For more information, please visit:
