Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Campus Dean of Graduate Student Life. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Student Orientation and Transition Programs and is responsible for supporting the quality of life for the graduate student experience, to advocate for graduate students, and connect graduate students to each other and to university resources. In this role, the Assistant Dean coordinates and advocates for institutional resources for graduate students and mitigating challenges that might distract students from their academic and personal goals.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Works closely with graduate academic programs to ensure students have access to university resources as they navigate their graduate school journey.
  • Works closely with the Graduate Student Association, meeting with the executive board, to stay abreast of issues and concerns related to graduate students and coordinate programming opportunities for graduate students.
  • Works with each School in their orientation programs for graduate students and works closely with Residence Life to provide campus orientation to students living on campus.
  • Supervise a College Student Affairs program intern and student workers in the office suite in the Graduate Student Lounge.
  • Works closely with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs regarding recruitment and selection of incoming graduate student interns for the College Student Affairs Program and recognition programs and awards specifically for graduate students.
  • Serves as a resource for graduate students at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. They meet with students and student groups to connect them to resources and to help them make a successful transition to life outside the classroom. They will have open office hours to meet directly with students and meet with student organizations as requested to talk about available student resources outside the classroom.
  • Keep the Dean of Students and other Student Affairs leadership staff aware of outstanding graduate student issues and concerns and offer recommendations to help make graduate students more connected to life at Rutgers University.
  • Budget management, policy development, marketing and outreach, and event planning.
  • Represent the university at campus functions, regional meetings, and national conferences.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs.
  • A minimum of five years relevant experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comparable educational background and experience is expected in student development theories and practices to understand the terms, sensitivities and complexities of a student-centered very large institution.
  • Experience in a department within a Student Affairs organization (e.g. Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Development).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working with or advising graduate students.
  • Seven to ten years working with the college population
  • Diverse work experience with student affairs, faculty, deans, staff and a diverse graduate student population.
