College of Engineering

About the Department

The College of Engineering at NC State University is among the largest and most preeminent engineering colleges in the nation, with total expenditures of $258 million in FY 2021-22. With nine degree-granting departments within the college and three additional affiliated departments in other colleges, NC State Engineering offers its more than 11,000 graduate and undergraduate students a broad and diverse engineering education. The college offers 18 bachelor’s, 21 master’s and 13 doctoral degree programs in an inclusive, welcoming environment that emphasizes collaborative, multidisciplinary work and encourages undergraduates to participate in research alongside graduate students and faculty members.

The college’s sizable research enterprise posted $215 million in expenditures from all sources in 2021-22 and routinely ranks in the top 15 in research expenditures among U.S. colleges of engineering, according to the American Society for Engineering Education. Among its more than 20 federally-funded research centers and institutes are a National Science Foundation (NSF) Science and Technology Center focused on sustainable use of phosphorus and an NSF institute studying artificial intelligence and education. Over the last 15 years, the college has led two NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERC), ASSIST and FREEDM, and is one of only two schools to ever lead two ERCs at the same time and one of only two schools to ever be awarded the lead role in three.

In addition, the college leads a National Security Administration-funded Science of Security Lablet and leads PowerAmerica, a National Manufacturing Innovation Institute charged with furthering the domestic production of wide bandgap semiconductor technologies. An NSF Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research effort led by the college is building a 5G wireless testing platform in North Carolina’sResearch Triangle region.

The college has moved most of its departments to a state-of-the-art engineering building complex located on NC State’s Centennial Campus, a groundbreaking research campus that brings together academia, private businesses and government agencies and is a model for the 21st-century research-intensive university campus. The fourth and newest engineering building in the complex, Fitts-Woolard Hall, opened in 2020 and is home to two academic departments, plus the dean’s administrative offices.

The college’s outstanding faculty includes 19 members of the National Academy of Engineering, three members of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, three winners of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation and an Emmy Award winner. The outstanding young faculty members regularly receive NSF CAREER awards, averaging three to five per year over the past 10 years. U.S. News & World Report currently ranks the college No. 26 in graduate programs and No. 13 among public colleges of engineering. The college offers a robust online learning program called Engineering Online and is consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top 10 among online graduate engineering and computer information technology programs.

With funding from the North Carolina legislature, the college is poised to add 4,000 students and more than 100 faculty members over the next few years to help meet the needs of the state’s booming technology sector. Engineering North Carolina’s Future also includes $30 million for facility upgrades.

Efforts to engage the college’s 70,000 living alumni are led by the NC State Engineering Foundation. The college’s endowment is worth $230 million as of June 30, 2022.
