The College of Sciences
at NC State University is home to highly-regarded programs in the biological, mathematical and physical sciences. The college launched in 2013, combining the programs of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences with several of the biological sciences programs from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. With 4,120 students and 580 faculty, staff and postdoctoral researchers, the college is one of the largest and most research-intensive colleges at the university. The college has a total annual budget of $117 million, with $40 million in research expenditures and endowment assets of $79 million.
The college’s vision, as outlined in its strategic plan

, both of which were enacted in February 2022, were designed to help make the college the first choice for students, faculty and staff from all groups and backgrounds who want to study and work in a comfortable and inclusive environment. Through its many programs and events
, the college is raising awareness about diversity, equity and inclusion and the importance of supporting groups who are underrepresented in the sciences.
The college is increasingly known as a research powerhouse, with faculty receiving 391 awards totaling $50 million in funded projects in FY 2021-22, the most in the nine-year history of the college. The college is now the second-leading facilities and administrative revenue generator among all colleges at NC State. Research activities will be further elevated by the university’s increased support for interdisciplinarity. This is highlighted by the development of NC State’s new Integrative Sciences Building on the university’s historic North Campus, in which College of Sciences faculty and staff will be the primary occupants. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023, with the building’s opening scheduled for 2026.
Most faculty and staff in the college work out of its six academic departments: Biological Sciences
; Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
. These units are at the forefront of several growing areas of interdisciplinary science — such as big data, bioinformatics, environmental health science, geospatial analytics and precision medicine — that examine global questions and opportunities and teach students skills highly valued by employers. Overall, the college offers 16 bachelor’s degrees, 23 master’s degrees, one distance education master’s degree and 14 doctoral degrees.
The college is also significantly involved in efforts to cultivate science literacy through its efforts in science outreach. At the Science House
, the college’s K-12 outreach unit, programming reaches tens of thousands of North Carolina teachers and K-12 students each year, including thousands of students who participate in the N.C. Science Olympiad. In addition, the college is home to the North Carolina State Climate Office
, which serves as the primary scientific extension resource for weather and climate science for the state.
Essential Job Duties
NC State invites applications and nominations for the position of dean of the College of Sciences. The university seeks a leader committed to providing inclusive, world-class education to students; to catalyzing scientific research and innovation that improve our world and our collective understanding; and becoming a local and global hub for public participation in science to connect our entire community to scientific discovery and continued development of research and learning in meaningful ways.
The Dean is the chief academic, administrative and budgetary officer and spokesperson for the college, and reports directly to the executive vice chancellor and provost. The dean provides strong leadership and strategic direction for the college’s academic departments, programs, and initiatives within a complex fiscal and personnel environment.
The Dean must have a record of distinguished accomplishments in teaching, research, and leadership. The successful candidate will also have a strong history of relevant administrative experience and a high level of national recognition in the academic community. The dean will be committed to efforts to expand public participation and discovery in science and to recruit, retain and lead a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff to achieve this goal.
The Dean is responsible for the following:
- Providing strong, visionary leadership and strategic direction for the college;
- Representing the college within the university at a skilled, politically-astute level with respect to campus resources and issues;
- Promoting a culturally responsive and inclusive environment, with a strong commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff and students;
- Cultivating a culture of interdisciplinary education, scholarship, and engagement both within the college and in partnership with other colleges and creating systems that reward such interdisciplinarity;
- Recognizing and valuing the contributions of everyone in the college, encouraging the high performance and excellence of faculty, staff and units within the college, and the delivery of high-quality academic programs.
- Providing visionary leadership in maintaining and advancing the college’s academic and research excellence within the university and relative to national and international peers;
- Fostering high-impact interdisciplinary research and collaboration within the college and building partnerships and alliances across the university and with industry.
- Representing the diverse community, programs, and interests of the college persuasively to both internal and external constituencies;
- Engaging with internal and external constituencies regarding the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs;
- Cultivating science literacy through the college’s efforts in science outreach;
- Openly communicating in a transparent manner that provides clarity in financial management and decision-making;
- Efficiently managing the financial resources of the college and effectively advocating for resources; and
- Being a successful fundraiser and a visible, interactive participant in external-facing activities with alumni and donors, including partnering with the College of Sciences Foundation and the Alumni Advisory Board.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
- A terminal degree in their field and qualifications for an appointment as a full professor with tenure in at least one of the departments within the college.

- Ability to function in a complex, high-demand environment, balancing and executing internal and external responsibilities;
- Outstanding communication skills, including interpersonal, written, verbal, presentation and listening capabilities;
- Demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive environment for faculty, staff and students, and a commitment to advancing the diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives within the college;
- A clear commitment to excellence in teaching, research and scholarship;
- Distinguished record of scholarship in sciences;
- Evidence of working effectively and collaboratively with faculty, university administration, alumni and other constituent groups and partners both within and outside the university; and
- An affinity for fundraising, and the ability to contribute to and lead relationship-based development efforts.
